The Day After Tomorrow, in Brazil now
Here we go: while forests are burning in Lebanon, Turkey and Sardinia, in Brazil the temperature plummeted. The intense cold caused blizzards in the south of the country. Where I live in São Paulo the temperature of 4° Celsius is really uncomfortable and very unpleasant.
The day I saw this movie (The Day After Tomorrow) in the cinema in 2004 I left the mall and went to the supermarket and bought food for about 3 months. When I got home I started to reflect on my conduct. This had never happened to me.
I have always been very rational and skeptical and never, ever had I stocked so much food at home. Until then for me "climate change" was a hypothesis. The movie managed to totally transform my perception.
And since then... the truth is, things are getting worse. But the worsening occurs in a slow and increasing way and we adapt to the new normal without noticing that we are on the edge of the precipice.
Why did I only feel the climate change after this movie?
The time of change in reality is slow and diffuse and we get used to it without realizing the true magnitude of what happens. Film time is fast and concentrated. That's why fiction looks like reality, while reality is experienced as fiction. That's the difference between reality and a good movie.
